Tonia Bui, founder of Politics Within Politics (see detailed biography below), joins the podcast for its lucky 88th episode to talk about her extensive experience working on local and state-level campaigns, why local political engagement is important and impactful, and why the lack of diversity in campaign staffing is causing blindspots, poor messaging and outreach, and bad outcomes for campaigns. Tonia Bui is the founder of “Politics Within Politics,” a blog for Montgomery Community Media that focuses on the intersections between gender, race, and politics. Her work has been cited by political science scholars in the Third Edition of Campaigns on the Cutting Edge and her commentary appeared in the 2014 Edition of the Harvard Asian American Policy Review.

Most recently, she was the treasurer for the Hoan Dang for County Council (At-Large) campaign in Montgomery County, Maryland. In September 2018, Tonia was appointed by County Executive Isiah Leggett to serve as a commissioner for the Montgomery County Commission for Women  (Commission). Prior to the Commission, Tonia was an active member of the Montgomery County Community Development Advisory Committee, which provides community development block grant funding recommendations to the Montgomery County Executive. Tonia‘s political experiences also include serving former Vice Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, Rep. Xavier Becerra (CA-34) as a Member Outreach Assistant, former Virginia State Delegate candidate Hung Nguyen as a campaign communications director (District 67), and the Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia. Additionally, Tonia previously worked for the former offices of U.S. Senator Barack Obama (IL-13) and California Assembly Member Fiona Ma (CA-12).

Tonia holds a Master in Public Policy from American University and a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications and Gender & Women’s Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Tonia is also a graduate of the WeLead Program from the Women & Politics Institute at American University, Class of 2010.
